2022 was a year in which the federal government and businesses alike increased their focus on cybersecurity. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security reported the threat of cyber-attacks from adverse nations and criminal actors has increased in both sophistication and frequency. One way in which transactional criminal organizations have launched such cyberattacks is by sending emails with malicious attachments and links to fraudulent websites to gain access to data and resources and harvest sensitive information. The frequency and sophistication of ransomware attacks have prompted the Department of Homeland Security to coordinate with local governments and the private sector to confront threats, address risks, and implement response plans.

Planning for cyber incident response has become vital. When an attack occurs, organizations must act quickly to expel attackers, remediate vulnerabilities, and mitigate damage. The response often requires businesses to undertake coordinated with legal counsel and multiple resources including incident response and forensic investigative teams, crisis communication managers, and even professional ransom negotiators.

Participants in this session will learn strategies for security incident response preparedness as well as best practices for managing a cyber-attack. You will also learn about the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's response to the increase in cyberattacks, including the "Shield's Up" campaign, launched by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and other security directives.
